welcome to

the Sergeant Alfred B. Hilton Foundation

Sergeant Hilton was a son of Harford County, Maryland, a decorated hero of the United States Colored Troops (USCT), celebrated for his unwavering courage at the Battle of New Market Heights near Hampton Roads, Virginia during the civil war. As one of only 16 Medal of Honor recipients from the USCT during the Civil War, he stands as a powerful reminder of dignity, leadership, and the commitment and importance of honoring our nation’s colors.

This foundation was created to honor that legacy, preserving his story, elevating the contributions of the USCT, and empowering communities through education, remembrance, and outreach.

We’re grateful you’re here. Join us as we carry his legacy into the future and create an impact that lasts for generations.

The United States Colored

Troops U.S.C.T.

The United States Colored Troops (U.S.C.T.) were African American regiments formed during the Civil War who served with extraordinary courage and resolve, despite facing unequal treatment and heavy losses. By war’s end, they made up nearly one-tenth of the Union Army and suffered casualty rates far higher than their white counterparts, yet they fought with distinction and honor, forever proving their worth as soldiers and defenders of the nation.
